The text is trimmed of leading/trailing whitespace and split on any run of whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, line breaks). Each resulting chunk counts as one word, so extra spaces between words never inflate the count.
Characters (no spaces) counts every non-whitespace character, including punctuation — it's a raw character tally, not a word tally. A word like "don't" is 5 characters but 1 word.
It's based on a commonly cited average silent-reading speed of 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest minute. Actual reading speed varies by content difficulty and individual reader, so treat it as a helpful estimate rather than an exact figure.
